About Motion Theater
Motion Theater™ is a form of improvised, autobiographical physical theater. The form was created by long time Bay Area performer Nina Wise over the course of many years of practicing and performing modern dance, as well as improvised and scripted theater.
What distinguishes Motion Theater is its particular blend of movement and language. The autobiographical stories are not just told, but also are expressed through the physicality of the actor. But the form is not mime: the actor does not try to draw an image with his hands and body. Instead, the images are expressed in an impressionistic way as the narrative unfolds. This combination of movement that is strictly tied to the narrative, autobiography that can contain both historical narratives from childhood as well as stories of the past 24 hours, and the spontaneity of improvisation are the components of Motion Theater that make it immediate, truthful, surprising, and a unique art form.
